Sinds een paar maandjes heb ik kernel panics op mijn macbook uit medio 2010. Ik weet het is een oud beestje, maar ik vraag me af of ik het zelf kan oplossen of dat het beestje gewoon op is.

NVIDIA GPU (grafische kaart) geheugen fout o.i.d....?



Er zitten er twee in jouw systeem, de ingebouwde Intel en een NVIDIA kaart. Er is software om de NVIDIA uit te schakelen maar dan moet je natuurlijk kunnen opstarten. Misschien heeft iemand een idee om dat toch voor elkaar te krijgen. AHT gedaan?

Ik ben hier geen echte expert in, maar ik kan niet zo gauw iets verdachts ontdekken.

Dat Bitdefender lijkt me echter niet zo'n goed idee. Dat is een matig aangeschreven app die veel geheugen kost (en je hebt slechts 4Gb RAM) en gemakkelijk tot ellende leidt. Als je die eens de-installeert, zou je wel al eens van je probleem verlost kunnen zijn.

Als je per se een virusscanner wilt gebruiken, zou ik de gratis versie van VirusBarrier zo af en toe gebruiken als je onraad bespeurt. Maar zet het zeker niet permanent aan.

Je hebt al een SSD, maar zet er ook eens 2 x 4 of 2 x 8 RAM in. Ook dat gaat je helpen het oude beestje nog even een jaartje of twee levend te houden. En anders is dit een prima deal.

Er is software om de NVIDIA uit te schakelen maar dan moet je natuurlijk kunnen opstarten.

Oeps, verkeerd begrepen, je MacBook start wel op.. Probeer dit dan eens om de NVIDIA kaart tijdelijk uit te schakelen en kijk of dat helpt:

Een Kernel Panic heeft vaker met hardware dan met software issues te maken.

Dat ziet er mij een vrij nette Etrecheck uit. En ik kan ook zo dadelijk niks vreemds vinden, behalve:
dat het mij volledig ontgaat waarom je SSDs gepartitioneerd/ geformatterd zijn met APFS.

Bij High Sierra hoort normaal toch HFS+/ Mac OS Extended?

Ben je misschien teruggegaan naar High Sierra na een mislukte upgrade naar Mojave of Catalina?
Dat kan je Macje nl. helemaal niet aan!

Heb je een backup? Dan zou ik eens overnieuw proberen installeren, maar dan met de juiste formattering van je SSDs.

Enfin, leg eerst eens uit wat je precies hebt gedaan om met APFS te zitten op die SSDs.
Wij zijn nieuwsgierig!

APFS kan ook maar was dat voor interne drives toen niet een soort van optioneel/experimenteel? Interessant om te weten hoe dat bij TS is gegaan inderdaad.

APFS is de standaard voor SSD's sinds High Sierra.

HEXDIY, je kunt het natuurlijk zelf ook even nakijken: Apple File System (APFS), het standaardbestandssysteem voor Mac-computers met macOS 10.13 of hoger
Dat voorkomt verwarring.

(Edit: nou ja, ben ik nr 3 dan met deze info...)

Ik zie in het EC rapport idd ook niks bijzonders.
Wanneer begonnen de KP's precies? Had je iets aan de software of hardware gedaan? Heb je alle hardware inmiddels losgekoppeld?

Je backupt toch wel he? 

Ik zou er een vers systeem op knallen, virusshit er inderdaad af. Zo weet je zeker of het geen softwarematig probleem is.

Vermoeden is dat de GPU mogelijkerwijs een probleem geeft. Wanneer je dit element van de Mac extra belast en je krijgt direct bij de extra belasting consequent een kernel Panic, dan kan je zo goed als zeker concluderen dat dat element defect is.

Je kan de GPU extra belasten door deze benchmark tool te draaien:

Overigens gaat de test door tot in lengte van dagen. Als je binnen 1 minuut geen kernel Panic krijgt, dan kan de GPU nog steeds defect zijn, maar de kans daarop is dan een stuk kleiner.

APFS is de standaard voor SSD's sinds High Sierra.

@Mac Gaav & Flix: mijn nederige excuses, ik had mijn datums voor APFS verkeerd.
Het vreemde is echter dat ik hier al perfect werkende Macs heb gehad die draaien op High Sierra met een HFS+ schijfformattering...

Enne jawel Martijn: als een semi defecte GPU niet finaal ontploft onder Unigine Valley, dan weet ik het ook niet meer.

Dat is goede raad, beste Boiing!
Er is echter nog een smeriger truukje om die defecte GPU permanent lam te leggen, en enkel op de (minder krachtige) interne Intel GPU te draaien bij die machines:

Het 2010 15" Model heeft een falende tantal condensator die GPU met stroom moet verzorgen. Als deze faalt komen steeds meer Kernal Panics met betrekking op de GPU. Deze condensator kost noch geen 2 euro. De GPU is bij het 2010 model bijna nooit defect.
