Ruim twee weken geleden voegde Apple de Radeon Pro 5600M videokaart als optie toe voor de 16-inch MacBook Pro. Die kaart is met 875 euro beslist niet goedkoop, maar het is dan ook een echte krachtpatser waarmee deze MacBook Pro zelfs de iMac Pro voorbij gaat.

Voor iedereen die op deze MacBook Pro Apple’s Boot Camp wilde gebruiken was er alleen een probleempje: AMD had voor deze nieuwe videokaart nog geen driver uitgebracht. Inmiddels hebben ze wat dit betreft daar ook hun leven gebeterd, en ook voor deze videokaart zijn nu de drivers bij AMD op deze pagina te vinden. Daardoor zou je op deze MacBook Pro nu ook de meeste recente versie van Windows 10 moeten kunnen draaien.


Ben je nog niet goed met Boot Camp bekend, op deze pagina van Apple zelf kan je alle details vinden. Boot Camp zelf is gratis, maar je hebt er natuurlijk nog wel een versie van Windows voor nodig.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro with new Radeon Pro 5600M GPU came in first when running our Motion, Lightroom, and Photoshop tests. It came in second place running Final Cut Pro X and Premiere Pro.

The 2017 iMac Pro came in first running Final Cut Pro X, Compressor, and Premiere Pro tests.

The 2013 Mac Pro 'turbo tube' with the RX 5700 XT ran second in the Compressor and DaVinci Resolve tests.

The ten year old Mac Pro 2010 tower with the RX 5700 XT GPU came in first running Warhammer II, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and DaVinci Resolve tests.

UPDATE: Added the results for the 16-inch MacBook Pro with a eGPU box sporting an RX 5700 XT GPU. That improved results for some apps (DaVinci, Lightroom, Warhammer II, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) but hurt performance of other apps (Motion, Photoshop). If you use an eGPU, be sure to set "Prefer External GPU" in app's Get Info or set it in app's Preferences. Use Activity Monitor's GPU History graph (Command + 4) to verify which GPU is active.

So is the 16-inch MacBook Pro fast enough to replace your Mac desktop? It depends on what apps are most critical to your workflow.
