Despite the smaller screen size, you don't miss out on as much as you might expect. Compared to the regular iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch screen, there are maybe one or two lines of text that are cut off. What you actually miss out on is that sense of immersion you can get from a bigger screen when you’re playing a game or watching a movie. Those were the only times this screen felt cramped.
The iPhone mini is by far the best value per dollar in Apple’s 2020 lineup. With this you get all of the power and advances of the iPhone 12, everything but the telephoto camera (and 60fps/4K video) of the iPhone 12 Pro and everything but the new sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Those additions will cost you anywhere from $300-$400 more over the life of your device if you choose to step up.
People who want a smaller phone will be hard-pressed to find a device as compelling as the iPhone 12 mini. That's because Apple took nearly everything that worked well in the larger iPhone 12 including its high-powered A14 Bionic chipset and excellent cameras and packed them into a pint-sized frame. The catch: While the mini offers the same great performance as the larger model, its battery life leaves much to be desired.
I think the iPhone 12 Mini could be a sleeper hit, even though I prefer larger phones. It has a 5.4-inch screen versus the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 12.It’s the model that people who own the regular iPhone 6, iPhone 7 or iPhone 8, and prefer the smaller size, may want to buy instead of upgrading to the larger iPhone 12. And, unlike the more affordable iPhone SE, the iPhone 12 Mini includes a larger display in a small form factor, 5G, new MagSafe charging, Face ID and better cameras.
Have I convinced you that a slightly smaller iPhone might be what you need? A phone you’ll carry comfortably on walks and jogs, lose between the couch cushions, and fish for in the dark space of your bag or backpack? A phone that won’t take up too much space on your nightstand, or on the dinner table when we can all go back to eating together again? A phone that won’t suck up too much space in your brain?I’m not suggesting a small iPhone will cure our collective obsession with phones. But maybe, with all the big things we’re facing every day, a phone doesn’t have to be one of them. It could be one less thing.
The Apple iPhone 12 mini might be the smallest of the iPhone 12 models, but it is a fantastic little device that shouldn't be underestimated. It has a lovely lightweight compact design, absolutely stunning display, great cameras, and delivers a smooth and fluid performance. Its battery life isn't amazing and the lack of telephoto lens does mean you can't zoom in when taking photos without losing quality, but they are really the only things we can complain about.
But if we’re talking about value, about bang for the buck, the iPhone 12 Mini is the standout. There was a time when miniaturization in technology cost a premium. Smaller cell phones cost more than larger ones. A smaller camera that captured the exact same quality images cost more than a larger one. That the iPhone 12 Mini costs $100 less than the iPhone 12 feels too good to be true. I suspect most of the people who want a 12 Mini don’t want it because it costs less, they want it entirely because they prefer the size. It’s like Apple is just handing these people a $100 bill along with the no-compromise smaller iPhone they’ve been waiting for.
