Nieuwe iPad Pro modellen: krachtig en allround
Voordat er ook maar een woord gesproken was tijdens de keynote stond het al als een paal boven water dat Apple nieuwe iPad Pro’s zou gaan presenteren. Maar eerst waren de nieuwe MacBook Airs en de Mac mini’s aan de beurt, daarna was alle aandacht voor de twee nieuwe iPad Pro modellen.

Als Apple voor die volgorde gekozen had om de nieuw iPad Pro de meeste aandacht te geven was dat niet nodig, deze update is zo overtuigend dat die vanzelf veel aandacht krijgt. Om te beginnen met de buitenkant: deze iPad is niet alleen wat dunner, wat eerst de iPad Pro 10.5-inch was heeft nu een 11-inch display gekregen, terwijl de buitenmaten allemaal naar beneden geschroefd zijn.


Bij het grotere 12,9-inch model is ervoor gekozen om het scherm precies even groot te laten, terwijl de buitenmaten kleiner werden. Daardoor is dit model een stuk kleiner, handzamer en ook wat lichter is geworden (46 gram minder).

Weg zijn de afgeronde randen, de buitenrand is plat geworden, waardoor het design in de verte doet denken aan de iPhone 4 en 4s. Dat is niet alleen gedaan voor het uiterlijk, ook de Apple Pencil is vernieuwd en heeft een platte kant gekregen. Die kan je bij deze nieuwe iPad Pro modellen nu laden door die tegen die platte zijkant aan te leggen, die zal dan meteen magnetisch op zijn plaats gehouden worden, terwijl het opladen door inductie tegelijk ook start.

A12X Bionic processor

Maar is beslist niet alleen het uiterlijk wat nieuw is, deze iPad Pro modellen worden aangedreven door dezelfde A12X Bionic processor, een nog krachtiger versie dan de A12 Bionic-chip die in de nieuwe iPhones te vinden is. Apple vermeldde er bij dat deze iPad Pro daardoor krachtiger is dan 92 procent van alle portable PC’s die op dit moment op de markt zijn. Niet voor niets, want met de aankondiging van onder andere Photoshop CC voor iPad wordt duidelijk dat de iPad Pro een steeds serieuzere optie voor steeds meer professionals aan het worden is.

USB-C
   
Opvallend is ook het verdwijnen van Apple’s eigen Lightning aansluiting, die plaats heeft gemaakt voor USB-C. Daarmee wordt het niet alleen makkelijk om razendsnel data over te zetten, je kan met deze iPad Pro modellen ook externe schermen tot 5K resolutie aansturen. En dat is nog niet alles, je kan er zelfs je iPhone mee opladen. Daarvoor heb je dan wel een USB-C naar Lightning kabel nodig, bijvoorbeeld deze van Apple zelf, en door deze keuze voor USB-C heeft Apple nu ook een USB‑C-naar-mini‑jack-adapter USB‑C-naar-mini‑jack-adapter (€ 10,00) in het programma.

Face ID

Zoals verwacht hebben deze nieuwe iPad Pro’s allebei Face ID. Waarbij Apple iets opmerkelijks voor elkaar heeft gekregen. Want Face ID hierop werkt niet alleen in zowel landschap als portret (dus zowel horizontaal als verticaal), deze iPad Pro’s kunnen alle kanten opgedraaid worden, Face ID blijft gewoon werken.

Tweakers heeft de iPad Pro getest, wat hier te lezen is.

Conclusie in het kort: uitstekende tablet, matige laptop.

Een interessant stukje uit de conclusie:

Apple is een van de laatsten der mohikanen. Google heeft lang geprobeerd om van Android een tabletbesturingssysteem te maken, maar dat bleek niet aan te slaan. Nu heeft het de Pixel Slate uitgebracht, met Chrome OS en een Intel-processor. Sommige fabrikanten maken nog Android-tablets, maar voor de rest is Apple de enige die telefoonsoftware opblaast tot tabletformaat, in plaats van dat het desktopsoftware geschikt maakt voor touchscreens. Dit stukje in de Tweakers review klopt m.i. niet helemaal: “voor de rest is Apple de enige die telefoonsoftware opblaast tot tabletformaat, in plaats van dat het desktopsoftware geschikt maakt voor touchscreens.” Dat eerste is weliswaar precies wat Google met Android op tablets doet/deed, maar voor iOS kun je als developer wel degelijk onderscheid maken tussen een telefoon-app en een tablet-app. Bovendien dient een, weliswaar aangepaste, versie van OS X (= Desktop) als basis in iOS.

De reviewer is Arnoud Wokke, en die heeft nogal een zwart wit blik op Apple. Misschien is iOS wel een telefoon OS (ik label het liever als een mobiel OS), de apps zijn absoluut geoptimaliseerd voor telefoon dan wel tablet. Daar is het bij Android mis gegaan.
Op mijn werk heb ik al Windows, thuis wil ik geen systeembeheerder meer zijn!
