Ya it does this. You might also find that the music ends a bit before the slideshow is over and you will often get a photo at the end with no music. The black photo tacked onto the beginning and the end of the set of photos is a great way to take care of it in that not only does it help space the photos better to the music, but it also makes for a nice transition into and out of the slideshow on the DVD.

If the videos are multiplexed MPEG files then the audio and the video are muxed onto the same track. QuickTime, and therefore any application that uses QT like iTunes, the iPod, iMovie, etc. expects two separate tracks, one video and one audio. So when you play these muxed files, the video is played and the audio is not heard.
So you need to do a conversion on the file first. MPEG Streamclip is a popular one that comes in both Mac and Windows versions and is known to "repair" this problem.

First thing is to figure out what format the AVI video is in. See AVI, like QuickTime, is a container that holds the actual content. The content can be any number of different types of video format (e.g. Motion JPEG, DV format, H264, etc.). Open the file in QuickTime player and then use the menu option to display the video properties and report back what format video is actually inside the AVI container.
