De geruchten over tweede generatie AirPods doen al maanden de ronde, en eindelijk is het zover: vanaf vandaag zijn deze nieuwe AirPods te koop in de VS. Alleen zullen wij iets meer geduld moeten hebben, over een week zouden ze bij ons beschikbaar moeten zijn.
Zoals bij zoveel van Apple’s apparaten hebben ook deze nieuwe AirPods een nieuwe processor die natuurlijk ook binnenshuis bij Apple ontworpen is. Mede dankzij deze H1 chip zouden deze nieuwe AirPods 50 procent langer mee moeten kunnen voordat ze weer opgeladen moeten worden en kan je nu handsfree Siri activeren met “Hé Siri”. Met andere woorden, de batterij gaat langer mee, terwijl deze AirPods de hele tijd standby zijn om te kunnen horen of jij dat commando gebruikt. Daarbij is er, net zoals ook al in de eerdere geruchten voorbij kwam, een behuizing voor contactloos opladen, maar die wordt als aparte optie verkocht.

Mocht je je afvragen waar de H in H1 vandaan komt, dat schijnt simpelweg de H van Headphones te zijn. Deze chip zal waarschijnlijk in alle toekomstige bluetooth-oortjes van Apple te vinden zijn.
Geen registratie van lichaamsfunctiesOpvallende afwezige is de optie om deze AirPods ook te kunnen gebruiken voor het registreren van lichaamsfuncties, zoals de Apple Watch. Dat was ook iets wat in eerdere geruchten voorbij kwam, maar Apple rept daar met geen woord over. Misschien dat die plannen het uiteindelijk niet gehaald hebben, of dat die nog in een latere software update gaan komen?
Andere verbeteringenAndere verbeteringen in deze tweede generatie AirPods zijn dat het maken van een draadloze verbinding nu twee keer zo snel gaat, wat ook opgaat bij het schakelen tussen verschillende apparaten. Ook de verbinding bij telefoongesprekken zou sneller gemaakt moeten worden, daar zou een derde van de tijd zijn afgesnoept. Bij het geluid van games is er evenveel vooruitgang geboekt, dus daar ook een derde minder vertraging.
Optische sensors en accelerometersDankzij de optische sensors en accelerometers ‘weten’ deze AirPods ook welke microfoon er gebruikt moet worden voor Hé Siri of telefoongesprekken, en ook welke AirPod stil moet blijven als er tijdens een telefoongesprek maar één gebruikt wordt.
