Privacy is de afgelopen tijd een heet hangijzer, vooral omdat steeds duidelijker is geworden hoe dit door sommige bedrijven en overheden met voeten getreden wordt. Daarbij is Apple één van de partijen die keer op keer voor het recht op privacy staat, maar wat betekent dat nu precies?

Gisteren was er een openbare zitten (‘hearing’) van het committee in de Amerikaanse Senaat voor Commerce, Science and Transportation, waar een aantal kopstukken van onder andere Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Twitter, AT&T en Charter Communications het woord deden. Daar zat ook Guy "Bud" Tribble bij, Apple’s Vice President of Software Technology. Die was duidelijk niet uit op confrontatie, zoals tijdens zijn opening al bleek, maar waar hij ook meteen glashelder maakte hoe belangrijk privacy voor Apple is:

I am honored to be with you for this important hearing and to convey Apple's support for comprehensive federal privacy legislation that reflects Apple's longheld view that privacy is a fundamental human right.

Het is in wat hij daarna zei waar het echt interessant wordt, want hier geeft Apple kort maar krachtig weer wat de positie is van het bedrijf wat betreft ons aller privacy:

To Apple, privacy means much more than having the right to not share your personal information. Privacy is about putting the user in control when it comes to that information.

That means that users can decide whether to share personal information and with whom. It means that they understand how that information will be used.

Ultimately, privacy is about living in a world where you can trust that your decisions about how your personal information is shared and used are being respected. We believe that privacy is a fundamental human right, which should be supported by both social norms and the law.

Ook maakte hij duidelijk dat het risico bestaat dat nieuwe wetgeving het extra moeilijk gaat maken voor makers van apps:

We have an app store with 6 million developers in the U.S., some are small and medium-sized businesses, and we hope that the burden will not be on them as to record-keeping, to make sure it's not overburdensome for that class of companies.

En bij Apple denken ze duidelijk dat de Federal Trade Commission de autoriteit hierover zou moeten zijn:
