Ik heb vorig jaar bij mijn iPod photo een camera connector
gekocht voor precies het doel wat jij omschrijft.
Werkt perfect en bij syncen importeerd hij de photo's in
iPhoto als jij dat wilt tenminste 
je kan ook nee klikken.
De directory en foto's blijven gewoon staan op je iPod.
Of je moet aangeven dat hij de source leegd na import.
En je hoeft geen nieuw account aan te maken gewoon
even het volgende in acht nemen, en als je weer verder
gaat reizen wel weer autoupdate aanzetten he 8)
sorry voor het engels:
- Start iTunes.
- Connect the iPod. With iTunes in front, immediately
hold down the keys Command+Option. When the iPod
appears in iTunes source column, wait five seconds,
then release the keys. This will skip the automatic iPod
update.
- Set the iPod preferences to "Manually manage songs
and playlists". This disables the automatic iPod update.
To open the iPod preferences, select the iPod within
iTunes source column, then click onto the upcoming iPod
icon at the right bottom of the iTunes window
(the left icon).
En wat betreft de doomsenario's 
O ja en het kan ook niet Raw bestanden aan (ik gebruik
geen RAW)
