The GTX 780 with 6GB GDDR5 video memory is only slightly slower than the GTX 780 Ti and TITAN Black but costs much less.

The other factor in naming it the 'sweet spot' has to do with power. The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950. The same can't be said of the GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti or Radeon R9 280X -- all of which require an auxiliary power feed to avoid a nasty power down of your tower at the worst moment when too much wattage is demanded of the Mac Pro's factory power supply.

Did I mention that the GTX 780 with 6GB of GDDR5 matches the 6GB of GDDR5 in the TITAN?

The one fallacy to my 'sweet spot' award has to do with OpenCL. In case you hadn't noticed, the AMD Radeon GPUs smoked the NVIDIA GeForce GPUs running Photoshop's OpenCL accelerated Iris Blur filter and rendering LuxMark's OpenCL accelerated Room scene.

De lage energieconsumptie en hogere prestaties worden mede mogelijk gemaakt door efficiëntere scheduling en betere geheugencompressie. Daardoor is een GTX 980, die over 2048 Cuda-cores beschikt, sneller dan een GTX 780 Ti, die 2816 cores heeft, zo blijkt uit onze benchmarks. Naast efficiëntere cores heeft Nvidia de kloksnelheid van de gpu ten opzichte van de 780Ti aardig verhoogd. De GTX 980 tikt op 1126MHz en heeft een boostclock naar 1216MHz. Het 4GB grote gddr5-geheugen tikt effectief op 7GHz en communiceert met de gpu via een 256 bits brede bus. De tdp bedraagt slechts 165watt, terwijl dat bij de GTX 780 Ti nog 250 watt was.

Beide reference designs zijn voorzien van een dvi-aansluiting, drie displayport 1.2-aansluitingen en hdmi 2.0. Vooral naar die laatste mogelijkheid werd uitgekeken door bezitters van 4k-televisies die door hdmi 1.4 op een vernieuwingsfrequentie van 30Hz worden gelimiteerd. Het staat videokaartfabrikanten vrij om te kiezen welke aansluitingen ze op hun eigen variant van de 970 of 980 monteren.

The GeForce GTX 980 was an un-flashed Windows PC card. Though it boots (without startup screen) under OSX 10.10 Yosemite using NVIDIA's web driver for the Quadro K5000 for Mac, the CUDA system preference panel warns that the CUDA driver is not up-to-date even though the latest version 6.5.18 available is installed. Therefore CUDA dependent apps like DaVinci Resolve and OctaneRender either quit or do nothing.

CONCLUSION
Once CUDA is working under OS X 10.10, the GeForce GTX 980 will likely become the top choice by Mac Pro tower owners who want a power efficient but faster GPU.
