Apple vroeg al eerder patent aan voor een specifiek gebruik van flexibele schermen, daar kon je op MacFreak ruim een maand geleden ook al over lezen. Maar bij een buigbaar device hoort natuurlijk ook een gebogen batterij.

Dat is dan ook precies waar Apple eind oktober 2011 patent voor heeft aangevraagd, om precies te zijn voor Curved Battery Cells For Portable Electronic Devices en Non-Rectangular Batteries For Portable Electronic Devices.





De batterijen zouden gemaakt worden door ze in een flexibel omhulsel te doen en ze gedurende vier uur lang, bij dertig graden Celsius onder minstens 0,13 kgf (per vierkante millimeter) druk te zetten.

Apple zelf zegt over het gebruik van deze patenten het volgende:

In some embodiments, the curve is formed to facilitate efficient use of space inside a portable electronic device. For example, the curve may be formed at one or more ends of the battery cell to allow the battery cell to occupy a curved and/or rounded space within the enclosure of a laptop computer, tablet computer, mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA), digital camera, portable media player, and/or other type of battery-powered electronic device.

Als ik goed lees gaat het hier over (uiteindelijk) 'gebogen' batterijen, niet over buigzame.

Nog een correctie dan: Het gaat  hier niet om een patent op gebogen batterijen (dat zou natuurlijk ook te gek voor woorden zijn) maar om een patent op een manier om gebogen batterijen te maken. Toch wel even een verschil.

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed malleable lithium ion batteries (LIBs) that retain energy even when twisted or bent, an advance that could mean a major shift in the consumer tech market — imagine bendable smartphones, tablets and e-readers.

“The advent of a high-performance flexible thin film battery will accelerate the development of next-generation fully flexible electronic systems in combination with existing flexible components such as display, memory and LED,” according to an announcement from the institute.
