[img=right]http://www.macfreak.nl/base/data/news/images/parallels_macpro.jpg[/img]Parallels Desktop is sinds de introductie en in afwachting van een officiële release van Bootcamp één van de betere alternatieven voor het draaien van Windows op je recente Intel Mac. Echter, Mac Pro gebruikers vielen tot afgelopen donderdag jammerlijk buiten de boot als het ging om dit prettige programma: het werkte simpelweg niet.

Sinds afgelopen donderdag is er echter Parallels Desktop RC 1884, ofwel de nieuwe aangepaste versie, met onder andere ondersteuning voor de nieuwe Mac Pro.

Een kort overzicht van de verbeteringen:

• Het draait nu ook voor developers onder “Leopard”.
• Windows Vista, althans de Beta en niet RC1, draait
• “Verbeterde” Parallels Tools
• Verbeterde video, USB ondersteuning
• Volledige ondersteuning voor Apple keyboards, waaronder de eject-knop
• Verbeteringen aan de “disk caching policy”, wat er bij de vorige versie voor zorgde dat Mac OS X stroperig aanvoelde tijdens of na een Parallels sessie

Ik weet niet wie het werkend heeft gekregen maar als ik de Readers reports over parallels bij Macintouch mag geloven dan zijn er nog veel problemen!

Het draait hier, maar ondanks het feit dat het sneller zou moeten zijn merk ik, zeker bij het opstarten, alleen maar meer spinning beachballs in OS X. Ach..

Teveel ram gegeven aan windows... En minder apps laten openstaan helpt veel.

Ik heb 256 gegeven gegeven voor Windows en 768 voor OSX, en het loopt normaal.
Via Boot Camp loopt XP wel vlotter...

Maar het zou ook een bug in een build can Mac OS X op de Mac de Mac Pro kunnen zijn (er zijn Mac Pro's op de markt met verschillende 'builds'.

Neil Lee of Cocoatech, which developed the innovative Path Finder alternative to Apple's clunky Mac OS X Finder, emailed us about a Mac OS X "stealth upgrade" for the Mac Pro:

[Neil Lee] Here's something strange - it seems there are at least two different builds of OS X 10.4.7 that are included with shipping Mac Pro machines.
We (Cocoatech) have been trying to track down an issue with Path Finder where it crashes on launch when run on the new Mac Pros. After reporting this to Apple they confirmed the issue and said it was due to a bug in the OS that they said they would fix in an OS update (the rumoured 10.4.8?). We've been waiting with bated breath to get our hands on a Mac Pro ourselves so we could do some of our own testing.
To our surprise, Path Finder ran with no problems on our Mac Pro (3GHz, 3GB RAM). After much troubleshooting to try to narrow down what the difference was between our machine and other Mac Pros that exhibited this issue we discovered the installed OS on our Mac Pro is a newer build.
Our customers that have been having this problem all seem to be running Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8K1079. Our Mac Pro, which runs Path Finder just fine, is Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8K1124.
I'd be interested to hear from other Mac Pro owners what OS X build their machine is running. To see the build number go under the Apple menu to "About This Mac". When the About This Mac window appears, click on the version number just under the Apple logo and it will change to show you the build number.
Obviously Apple caught this issue (albeit a little late) and has updated their factory OS X image. But how many machines out there got the old, "buggy" version?
