Gisteren was het dan zover, de toch wel langverwachte indie biopic over het leven van Steve Jobs en Apple werd vertoond aan een aantal genodigden. Hieronder een overzicht van wat de verschillende media ervan vonden:

Mary Pols, Time.com: "He gives so many inspirational speeches about innovation in Jobs that I was tempted to pull out my laptop and check my email. In between, he's either haranguing some oaf about lack of productivity or firing someone. Do we get a sense of the man's greatness? A bit, but mostly we get a sense of the man's douchebaggery."

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle: "But the main flaw of Jobs is that it limits itself to the ancient history of Jobs' rise and fall and rise at Apple. The movie might begin in 2001, but it never returns to the 21st century. Thus, all the dramatic events of Jobs' last dozen or so years aren't dealt with at all."

Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News: "Like the man it's about, Jobs is thin and unassuming, but keeps surprising you with ideas and innovation. An almost ironically styled old-fashioned biopic, this sharp look at the late Steve Jobs and the technological and cultural changes he brought about is entertaining and smart, with a great, career 2.0 performance from Ashton Kutcher."

Manohla Dargis, The New York Times: "Fuzzed up and hunched over, Mr. Kutcher looks somewhat like the young Jobs, and there are moments -- as when he gives another character a small, devious look as if sliding in a knife -- that the casting seems more than a matter of bottom-line calculation. But Mr. Kutcher doesn't have the tools that some actors use to transcend weak material and either he didn't receive any help or didn't allow any real direction from Mr. Stern."

Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington Post: "Although I think I could watch a whole movie called Woz and not grow tired, Jobs eventually begins to suffer from an ailment common to many biopics: milestone fatigue. The film is so thick with Jobs' career highlights and lowlights that there's little room for insights. What made this famously private man tick?"

Wellicht de belangrijkste recensie komt natuurlijk van de man die er een groot deel van de tijd direct bij betrokken was en de echte Steve goed heeft gekend: Steve Wozniak.

Verhelderende uitleg hoor.

Het klinkt inderdaad als een gemiste kans dat de film ophoudt bij de iPod. De eerste jaren van Steve zijn al eens eerder onderhoudend verfilmd in Pirates of Silicon Valley.

@JGO mijn puntjes doelden op het feit dat je WOZ op diverse manieren kan interpreteren, maar je nooit echt weet wat hij meent en wat niet. Maar hijzelf weet inderdaad hoe waarheidsgetrouw de film JOBS is.

Amerikaans Engels is bijzonder rijk aan slang, overigens meestal weinig subtiel. En ‘douchbaggery’ (Mary Pols - Time) was nieuw voor me. Maar wel wist ik dat een douchbag het woord is voor ‘vaginale douche’. Al met al toch ietwat zorgwekkend, vond ik. Als vertaler moest ik er toch even werk van maken en alle onzekerheid werd vlot verhopen door de onvolprezen urban dic.
In het Nederlands kom je voor 'douchbag' een heel eind met het woord 'zak', al gaat er dan toch iets verloren van de geur- en kleurrijke associaties van het oorspronkelijke Engels.
'Douchbaggery' is lastiger. 'Aanstellerij' is te slapjes...

1.   douchebaggery

The greatest word of all time, simple yet pleasing in its onomatopoeic beauty. For one to commit douchebaggery, he/she is not limited to but may include some or perhaps all of the following behaviors:

- the wearing of flat-billed baseball caps backwards
- using an enormous amount of gel to spike the hair porcupine style
- wearing polo shirts or any other type of shirt with the collar popped, a disgusting gesture that should've died in the 1980s with parachute pants
- the sideways peace sign gesture
- overdone pursing of the lips
- too many visits to the tanning salon
- pointing at oneself, holding up beer cans, or making other obscenely immature gestures in solo or group photos
- following trends for the sake of fitting in (see "goatee")
- adding "The" or the suffix "-ster" to one's name, as in "The Rickster"

See 'Guido' or perhaps 'frat boy' for more. Essentially, "douchebaggery" is one of those things as easily understood by definition as it is by one's demonstrations of it.
At least guys with mullets can cut their hair, but there seems to be no cure for the douchebaggery exhibited by frat boys overcompensating for their small members.
