De site iFixit is voor de meesten van ons een oude bekende, er wordt op ons forum vaak naar verwezen als mensen zelf wat willen repareren aan hun Mac of iPhone. Want hun Guides (die er trouwens ook zijn voor Game Consoles) zijn lekker duidelijk en altijd voorzien van foto's van hoge kwaliteit.

Het nieuws is nu dat Apple het bedrijf iFixit in zijn geheel overgenomen heeft, in het persbericht ter ere van deze overname komen wat meer te weten.

We’re pleased to announce that iFixit has been acquired by Apple!

iFixit is the industry leader in the global repair movement. With more than 10,000 repair guides and millions of community members worldwide, iFixit has become the most trusted source for “before-you-buy” reviews of consumer electronics and “after-it-breaks” repair documentation.

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and generally does not discuss their purpose or plans. And financial details have not yet been disclosed. But, we at iFixit feel we ought to explain ourselves to our loyal community.

"Everyone has a number", admitted Kyle Wiens, iFixit’s CEO. "I didn’t think there was a reasonable number that would make me say, you know I was going to change the world with repair documentation but here’s a number. In the end, Apple gave us a number that we couldn’t refuse.

But it isn’t just a number for iFixit. As part of the deal, Apple made a commitment to produce the most replaceable electronic devices and personal computers on the market. This is a clear win for the whole iFixit community."

Apple is working hard to make devices last long enough to be upgraded or irrelevant, making repairability an antiquated notion. iFixit will become a key player in the future of Apple device development, starting with the new Smartphone Replaceability Index.

It has been an exciting adventure for all of us at iFixit, and we can’t thank our dedicated community enough.

We zijn benieuwd wat er met de site gaat gebeuren, de Guides zijn op dit moment in ieder geval nog steeds gewoon te bereiken.

Verder maakt het stukje in het persbericht waarin we lezen dat Apple met deze overname zichzelf wil committeren aan het maken van devices en computers die makkelijk te repareren zijn ons vooral erg blij. We zijn benieuwd naar de invloed van iFixit daarbij, want die zijn de afgelopen jaren erg kritisch geweest over de keuzes van Apple, zoals bijvoorbeeld voor pentalobe schroeven in plaats van standaard-schoeven in de iPhone.

Wel één extra toevoeging: als je zeker wilt weten of Apple vandaag echt iFixit gekocht heeft: het is misschien een goed idee om eerst even naar de kalender te kijken...

Eens een zeker aantal jaren op de teller, bestaat er een groter risico dat je er in trapt. Want desondanks je er beter op let, hou je er je minder mee bezig. De gein is er stilaan aan af, en het déja-entendu-gevoel hypothekeert de fun.

Waarmee ik wil toegeven dat ik de meeste viskes vandaag netjes gevangen heb, deze me ontglipt is.

Hier was ik eerlijk gezegd eerder ingetrapt dan dit draadje. En die van Flix (xs4all) is ook meesterlijk trouwens.

Mocht iemand er nog aan twijfelen of dit een 1-aprilgrap was, de Replaceability Index blijkt nog grappiger te zijn..!
