[img=right]http://www.xs4all.nl/~wester81/6800.jpg[/img]Naast al het iBook, XServe en PowerMac G5-geweld heeft Apple (op de Amerikaanse Apple Store althans) een iets simpelere versie van de NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL geïntroduceerd: de NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL. Deze kaart heeft net zoals z'n grote broer 256 MB geheugen en 2 DVI aansluitingen met Dual-Link.

Het enige verschil is dat de GPU (de processor van de videokaart) op 350 mhz loopt i.p.v. 400 mhz op de Ultra. Ook het GDDR3 geheugen is iets langzamer: 1 Ghz voor de GT, en 1,1 Ghz voor de Ultra. Hier staat tegenover dat de GT met 499 dollar 100 dollar goedkoper is dan de 599 dollar kostende Ultra. Kost die bundel van een 30" Cinema Display en de benodigde GeForce 6800 toch weer iets minder... De GT is overigens pas in november te bestellen.

De 6800 familie kent verder ook nog de gewone 6800 en de 6800 GTO, dit zijn verder afgeslankte versies van de GT die nog goedkoper zijn. Dus Apple: hoog tijd om die bejaarde standaard-videokaarten van de PowerMac G5 te vervangen door bijvoorbeeld de 6800, 6800 GTO, de mid-range 6600 serie of een vergelijkbare kaart van ATI!

The standard 6800GT (PC/reference design) only takes up a single slot but I guess they have a larger cooler in the Mac DDL model. (the 6800GT std core/memory clock is 350MHz/1GHz vs 400MHz/1.1GHz for the Ultra model. Many PC 6800GTs can be overclocked reliably to Ultra speeds, but there's no utility for that on the Mac.) I know you've heard this before but I wish the Mac Nvidia drivers had the control options and features of the PC version (including the coolbits tweak...)
Earlier this year I asked Nvidia (in the Q & A with Nvidia on the Mac Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL Graphics card) if they'd be willing to assist a (non-apple) programmer on that but the answer wasn't very promising. "Apple is our customer, so if this is something that they requested, then we would support it. "
I wonder if enough Nvidia card owners wrote Apple asking for a control panel (like ATI's displays 3D/GL overrides) if that would make a difference. (I doubt it but it can't hurt to ask...)
