Een kleine week geleden kon je hier op MacFreak al lezen dat de man onder andere achter Swift, Chris Lattner, van Apple naar Tesla is overgestapt. Dat zorgde voor veel speculatie, maar wat is nu echt de reden dat hij deze overstap maakte?

Het antwoord is te vinden in dit interview dat MacRumors met Chris Lattner hield, en veel van de speculaties blijken ongegrond. Om te beginnen de reden, die blijkt simpelweg te zijn dat hij na al die jaren bij Apple gewoon aan iets anders toe was:

I've been writing code for more than 30 years, and 16 of those years have been in the developer tools space. I love it, but I am ready to move on to something else.

Autopilot is clearly incredibly important to the world because of its ability to save people's lives (and increase convenience). It is also a very, very hard technology problem and my experience building large scale software and team building is useful. Of course, I’ve also been a huge Tesla fan for some time.

Dat hij het moeilijk vond om over te stappen maakt hij ook glashelder duidelijk, maar ook waarom hij die overstap uiteindelijk toch heeft gemaakt:

This was a very difficult decision, because I care deeply about the technology and people at Apple and because I could see myself staying there for many more years. In the end though, the opportunity to dive into a completely new area and work with the amazing Tesla Autopilot team was irresistible.

Update: Ons forumlid DirtyMay schreef in zijn reactie hieronder dat in de komende jaren Chris Lattner misschien weer terug zou keren bij Apple. Zo ver is het nog niet, maar na 6 maanden is hij er wel achter dat hij niet binnen Tesla past, zoals je in zijn eigen tweet hieronder kan zien.

Update 2: Na Tesla al weer zo snel te hebben verlaten heeft Chris Lattner een nieuwe werkgever gevonden: Google Brain.

Chris Lattner, one of the key creators behind the Apple programming language Swift, is on the move again. After a short six-month stay at Tesla, which he joined last year from Apple to act as VP of Autopilot Software, Lattner announced on Twitter today that his next stop is Google Brain.

Google Brain is the search giant's team focused on deep learning and artificial intelligence. It focused on helping to use AI across a range of products, tackling both research and product integration, working together with teams across Alphabet, including at DeepMind. Its ultimate stated motivation is to advance the field with open source projects, academic collaboration and publication.
