Mocht je nog één van de laatste mensen zijn die niet gelooft dat Apple bezig is met het ontwikkelen van een auto, dan is dit waarschijnlijk het nieuws dat je wel zal overtuigen: de site VentureBeat heeft een brief gevonden die Apple aan de overheid schreef om die ervan te overtuigen dat nieuwkomers evenveel kansen moeten hebben als bestaande spelers.

De brief is geschreven door Steve Kenner, Apple's Director of Product Integrity, en daarin kunnen we lezen dat Apple hard bezig is met het ontwikkelen van kunstmatige intelligentie en dat het ook van plan is om dat op de weg te gaan gebruiken:

Apple uses machine learning to make its products and services smarter, more intuitive, and more personal. The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.

Mocht je nog denken dat Steve Kenner het hier mogelijk alleen maar heeft over CarPlay, de alinea daarna laat weinig aan de verbeelding over:

Executed properly under NHTSA's guidance, automated vehicles have the potential to greatly enhance the human experience - to prevent millions of car crashes and thousands of fatalities each year and to give mobility to those without. It is vital that those developing and deploying automated vehicles follow rigorous safety principles in design and production. Such principles should not, however, inhibit companies from making consequential progress; there is no need to compromise safety or innovation.

De brief is er vooral op gericht om de National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ervan te overtuigen dat nieuwkomers ook een eerlijke kans op deze markt moeten krijgen, welke nieuwkomer Apple hierbij vooral in gedachten heeft mag duidelijk zijn.

Op dit moment is het voor nieuwkomers bijvoorbeeld moeilijker om toestemming van de NHTSA te krijgen om op de openbare weg te testen, Apple wil daarbij natuurlijk niet op achterstand komen.

Apple vraagt de NHTSA trouwens ook meteen om te besluiten tot het verplichten van het delen van de verkregen gegevens door alle partijen. Daarbij hanteert Apple natuurlijk wel hetzelfde uitgangspunt als bij alle andere data die mogelijk de privacy zou kunnen schenden, die data moet volgens Cupertino allemaal wel eerst geanonimiseerd worden.

Apple agrees that companies should share de-identified scenario and dynamics data from crashes and near-misses. Data should be sufficient to reconstruct the event, including time- series of vehicle kinematics and characteristics of the roadway and objects. By sharing data, the industry will build a more comprehensive dataset than any one company could create alone. This will allow everyone in the industry to design systems to better detect and respond to the broadest set of nominal and edge-case scenarios. Apple looks forward to collaborating with other stakeholders to define the specific data that should be shared.
