Een beroemde uitspraak van Steve Jobs is dat zonder de Mac er nooit lettertypes geweest zouden zijn. En omdat Windows alles kopieerde had waarschijnlijk geen enkele computer lettertypes gehad. Dit komt uit de Steve’s Commencement Speech voor Stanford University, hieronder op 3:30.

Eén van de allereerste van die lettertypes voor de Mac was New York, hoe dat aan zijn naam kwam vertelt de ook al legendarische Susan Kare hier. Maar ze opent daar met het plezier dat de lettertypes zelf brachten “Landing in the Macintosh group as a bitmap graphic designer was a lucky break for me, and one interesting part of the job was designing screen fonts. It was especially enjoyable because the Macintosh was able to display proportional typefaces, leaving behind the tyranny of monospace alphabets with their narrow m's and wide i’s.”


Het goede nieuws is dat Apple nu een moderne versie heeft gemaakt van New York, en dat dit lettertype gratis te downloaden is. Datzelfde geldt trouwens ook voor Apple’s lettertypes SF Pro en SF Compact, alledrie zijn samen te vinden op deze pagina. Let op, er zit een uitgebreide licentie bij, in het kort houdt die in dat dit lettertype niet voor publicatie gebruikt mag worden, behalve als dat bijvoorbeeld mock-ups zijn van schermafbeeldingen van één van Apple’s besturingssystemen.

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them.
