Als Apple eind dit jaar, of begin komend jaar, inderdaad al Macs gaat uitbrengen met eigen processors, dan ligt het ook voor de hand dat die binnenkort in massaproductie zullen gaan. En dat is precies wat DigiTimes nu bericht wat er binnenkort bij het Taiwanese TSMC gaat gebeuren.

Volgens DigiTimes gaat het daarbij naast de iPad Pro ook om processors voor een MacBook, welke versie wordt er niet bij vermeld. Het zou kunnen dat het hier om een MacBook Air gaat, maar het is natuurlijk ook goed mogelijk dat het hier weer echt om een laptop gaat die simpelweg MacBook heet. De laatste uit die serie was de 12-inch die uitkwam in juni 2017, en sindsdien niet meer is vernieuwd, maar min of meer werd opgevolgd door de nieuwe 13-inch MacBook Air modellen.

Apple will kick off its 5nm wafer starts at TSMC for its new Apple Silicon processors starting the fourth quarter of 2020, with monthly output estimated at 5,000-6,000 wafers, according to industry sources.

Apple is gearing up for the upcoming launch of its new-generation MacBook and iPad Pro series powered by its self-designed Arm-based processors, which will be fabricated using TSMC's 5nm EUV process technology, the sources indicated.

Let op dat het bij de aantallen gaat om de ‘wafers’. Dat zijn platen met veel processors er op, de aantallen processors die daaruit voortkomen liggen natuurlijk veel hoger.
