De iPhone 6s en iPhone 6s Plus zijn nog helemaal niet zo lang uit, maar Apple is de wereldleider op dit gebied en dus wordt er al weer druk gespeculeerd over de opvolger ervan.

Dit keer is het de beurt aan marktonderzoekbureau Trendforce, dat ook meteen deze markt in zijn geheel heeft bekeken. Daarbij zien ze een daling van 9,7 procent voor het jaar 2015, alleen de Chinese fabrikanten als Huawei, Lenovo en Xiaomi zullen de komende tijd hard groeien. Huawei is op dit moment trouwens al nummer drie wereldwijd. Xiaomi en Lenovo zullen vooral veel groeien omdat ze zich richten op nieuwe markten, en zich richten op het lagere segment.

Die groei betekent trouwens niet automatisch winst, want die zit vooral in het hogere segment, dat bijna helemaal door Apple gedomineerd wordt.

Double-digit shipment growth is a thing of the past for vendors as the global market has begun to plateau in 2015 after years of growth. While Samsung has kept its shipment title through the year, it is struggling against Apple in the high-end market and being pushed out of the mid-range and low-end segments by Chinese competitors. Facing challenges on two fronts, Samsung's smartphone business will operate in an increasingly difficult situation in the near future. Closely trailing Samsung in global shipments is Apple, which remains as the dominant and most profitable vendor in the high-end market.

As for Chinese brands, they are expanding overseas to gain market share. Huawei's shipments surpassed 100 million units this year and became the third leading vendor on account of its export efforts. Xiaomi and Lenovo are also branching into the emerging markets.

Maar voor ons is het vooral interessant wat ze te melden hebben over Apple, en daar komen een aantal dingen voorbij die ook al in andere geruchten te lezen waren.

The scope of hardware innovations is limited for Samsung whereas Apple plans to introduce waterproof iPhones

Apple will release the upgraded 4-inch iPhone C series in the second quarter of 2016. The next iPhone (currently dubbed "iPhone 7") will be introduced in the second half of next year. The major selling points of the next iPhone will be the 3GB memory upgrade for the 5.5-inch model and waterproof feature.

Based on TrendForce's estimation, about 260 million iPhones will be shipped in 2016, representing an annual growth of 12.5% and a market share of 18.5%. With the smartphone market becoming less profitable, iPhone will still have the highest margin next year compared with products from rival vendors.

Dat "waterproof" zou niet zo verbazend zijn, het is al bekend dat Apple in de 6s en 6s Plus veel heeft gedaan aan waterafstotendheid, het zou dan ook helemaal niet vreemd zijn als Apple nog verder zou gaan met deze ontwikkeling.

Wat niet voor de hand ligt is een oplossing waar andere fabrikanten tot nu toe voor gekozen hebben, dus met rubberen flapjes die je weg moet peuteren om nog bij de in- en uitgangen van de telefoon te komen. Waarschijnlijk zal Apple met een elegantere oplossing komen, dat zijn ze nu eenmaal aan hun stand verplicht.
