Het kwam eerder al voorbij in het nieuwsbericht over de macOS 15.1 update, vanaf april komend jaar zal Apple Intelligence ook beschikbaar zijn voor alle iPhone en iPad-gebruikers in de EU. Dus tegen de tijd dat de uitrol kompleet is, kunnen wij er ook zonder omwegen van meegenieten.

Apple zelf besteedde hier trouwens niet veel aandacht aan, want dit was alleen maar te lezen in een van de voetnoten bij het persbericht over Apple Intelligence.


Diezelfde voetnoot maakt trouwens ook duidelijk dat we tegen die tijd er wel van kunnen meegenieten, maar dat we voor een versie met ondersteuning voor het Nederlands en Vlaams nog wel wat meer geduld zullen moeten oefenen.

In april zullen Apple Intelligence-functies worden uitgerold naar iPhone en iPad-gebruikers in de EU. Dit zal veel van de kernfuncties van Apple Intelligence bevatten, waaronder Schrijfhulp, Genmoji, een vernieuwde Siri met uitgebreider taalbegrip, ChatGPT-integratie en meer.

Het aantal talen waarin je Apple Intelligence kunt gebruiken, wordt in rap tempo uitgebreid. Vanaf december is Apple Intelligence ook beschikbaar voor andere varianten van het Engels in Australië, Canada, Ierland, Nieuw‑Zeeland, het VK en Zuid‑Afrika. In april komt daar een reeks extra talen bij als onderdeel van een software-update, waarna in de loop van het jaar nog meer talen volgen. De ondersteuning wordt onder meer uitgebreid met Chinees, Duits, Engels (India), Engels (Singapore), Frans, Italiaans, Japans, Koreaans, Portugees, Spaans en Vietnamees.

Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het Vietnamees opvallend in dat rijtje, maar Apple heeft in dat land inmiddels ook meerdere faciliteiten gebouwd, en kennelijk is het marktaandeel daar de moeite om deze taal hierbij voorrang te geven. Het helpt ook vast dat er meer dan 100 miljoen mensen Vietnam wonen.

Maar wat moeten we ermee?
En wat was het verhaal van de EU omtrend dit onderwerp ook alweer?
Ik had het helemaal naast mij neergelegd (en velen in mijn omgeving), dus heb je zin en tijd voor een kleine update dan is onze dank groot.

Heb jij geen zin en tijd om even te zoeken dan ? Ik dacht dat daar al aardig wat over geschreven was de afgelopen maanden. Hier, onder andere. En wat je ermee moet vind je op de Apple website.

Maar wat moeten we ermee?

Je leven mogelijk (weer) wat makkelijker maken.

Als je jouw Mac en Siri op US English hebt ingesteld en Apple Intelligence hebt aangevraagd en gekregen, dan herstart je jouw Mac en zal je in diverse apps (bijvoorbeeld Mail en Notes) een nieuw AI-knopje vinden.

Daar heb ik als test deze tekst geplaatst:

But 8 GB of RAM on a Mac is, practically speaking, less than 8 GB of RAM on an iPhone or iPad, because of the profound differences in how memory is managed and application life cycles work on MacOS. On MacOS, every app that looks like it’s running is actually running. And there’s no hard limit on how many apps you can run. Even if your Mac runs out of actual memory, MacOS will use swap files to handle the overflow. iOS doesn’t work that way. iOS freezes apps in the background, freeing up memory — and while M-series-based iPads do support a limited form of virtual memory swap, A-series-based iOS devices (including all iPhones) do not.

Even taking Apple Intelligence out of the equation, Apple’s MacBook lineup was years overdue for a bump in base RAM. A few months ago David Schaub created a graph showing the base RAM of Apple laptops on a logarithmic scale since 1999. Today marks only the second time in the Tim Cook era that base Mac RAM went up. (Schaub made another graph for Mac desktops that goes all the way back to 1984, and the change in slope during the Cook era is even more striking on that chart.) Base RAM on Macs has been stuck at 8 GB since 2017. Even if you count the architecture transition from Intel x86 to Apple Silicon as a de facto bump in base memory — which is arguably fair, given the performance characteristics of an 8 GB Apple Silicon Mac compared to an 8 GB Intel Mac — Macs were still grossly overdue for a bump in base memory.

So I’m not surprised that Apple took this opportunity to double base RAM in the M3 MacBook Air models. I am quite surprised, though, that they went as far as to double the base RAM even in the entry-level $999 M2 MacBook Air. Finally.

En wat was het verhaal van de EU omtrend dit onderwerp ook alweer?

Wat het probleem was met Apple Intelligence en de EU is nooit duidelijk geworden. Apple maakte al snel duidelijk dat er een probleem was, maar zonder daarover specifiek te zijn, en Margarethe Vestager haakte daar (ook nogal vaag en naar mij smaak op zijn minst enigszins populistisch) op in:

…they say that they will not do that because of the obligations that they have in Europe. And the obligations that they have in Europe, it is to be open for competition. That is sort of the short version of the DMA. And I find that very interesting that they say, we will now deploy AI where we’re not obliged to enable competition. I think that is the most sort of stunning open declaration that they know 100% that this is another way of disabling competition, where they have a stronghold already.

Volgens mij creëerde de EU eerst erg veel onduidelijkheid met de eigen wet (de DMA), dat maakte Apple extra voorzichtig en vervolgens roept een eurocommissaris dat dat eigenlijk een soort van schuldbekentenis is.

Het leek mij beter dat ze eerst eens met Apple ging praten (en dat gebeurde waarschijnlijk allang, vandaar mijn gevoel van populisme).
