Spotify’s new free mobile experience lets you shuffle play:

Spotify’s new mobile access is be different depending on device. Tablets will have access to the same freemium experience users are used to on the desktop. Meanwhile, Spotify will offer a Shuffle service for Android and iOS smartphones.

But what about listening to music on your computer – with no time restrictions?

In the past, we had to restrict your listening time to some hours a month once a 6-month unlimited grace period had passed. But now, if you haven’t noticed, there’s no more time limit if you are using Spotify for free. We have removed these caps completely across all platforms – you can listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like, for as long as you want.

Streaming goed voor 27 procent Amerikaanse muziekindustrie

De inkomsten uit streaming muziekdiensten groeien flink door in de VS. Diensten als Spotify, Youtube en Pandora zijn inmiddels goed voor 27 procent van de totale omzet in de muziekindustrie van het land.

Dat blijkt uit nieuwe cijfers van brancheorganisatie RIAA (pdf) over de eerste helft van 2014. Aan streamingdiensten werd in totaal 859 miljoen dollar verdiend, terwijl dat een jaar eerder nog 673 miljoen dollar was.

Downloads, bijvoorbeeld via iTunes, zijn juist een krimpende categorie. Wel zijn de inkomsten uit downloads met 1,3 miljard dollar nog een stuk hoger dan de inkomsten uit streaming.

Ledengroei

Spotify heeft nu ruim 50 miljoen gebruikers, waarvan 12,5 miljoen een betaald abonnement hebben. Een halfjaar geleden stond de teller nog op 40 miljoen totaal, met 10 miljoen betalende leden. In maart 2013 had Spotify 6 miljoen betalende leden.

Ek wijst erop dat 80 procent van die betalende gebruikers begon met een gratis lidmaatschap. Ook noemt hij het een belangrijk wapenfeit dat de meerderheid van de gebruikers van Spotify jonger is dan 27 jaar.

All these moves are designed to create as many loyal Spotify users as possible before they're presented with a streaming option from Apple. Since the iPhone-maker earns so many billions of dollars from hardware sales, it could potentially undercut Spotify’s $10 a month subscription price point. Apple's streaming service could come bundled with iPhones or at least pre-installed, which could allow it to immediately leapfrog Spotify’s user count.

Spotify heeft vijftien miljoen betalende gebruikers

Spotify is inmiddels de grens van 15 miljoen betalende gebruikers gepasseerd. Dat heeft de streamingdienst bekendgemaakt. In november had de dienst nog 12,5 miljoen betalende gebruikers en in mei waren dat er 10 miljoen.

 Universal, het grootste muzieklabel ter wereld, wil dat muziekstreamingdienst Spotify zijn gratis muziekdienst beperkt.

Dat meldt the Financial Times op basis van anonieme bronnen. Universal zou licentieonderhandelingen met Spotify gebruiken om het bedrijf onder druk te zetten om veranderingen door te voeren.

 Apple zet grote muzieklabels onder druk om hun muziek van Spotify te halen als de muziekstreamingdienst een gratis versie blijft aanbieden. Op die manier zou Apple zijn eigen streamingdienst Beats Music sterker willen neerzetten.

Dat meldt althans The Verge op basis van anonieme bronnen. Het Amerikaanse Hof van Justitie zou op dit moment de praktijken van Apple onderzoeken.

Spotify heeft een overeenkomst met muzieklabels om muziek zowel op de gratis als betaalde versie van Spotify aan te bieden. Volgens de bronnen heeft Apple verschillende muzieklabels onder druk gezet om hen ervan te overtuigen muziek alleen voor de betaalde versie beschikbaar te maken.
