Door de teardowns van iFixit weten we dat er door Apple niet alleen ontzettend veel aandacht geschonken wordt aan het design van de buitenkant van iPhones, ook aan de binnenkant wordt erg veel aandacht geschonken.

Maar dat is niet altijd het geval geweest, de allereerste iPhone zag er van binnen nog helemaal niet zo strak en geordend uit. Niet verbazend, want het was Apple's allereerste telefoon en het is bekend dat tijdens het technische team met het zweet in de handen achter de schermen stond te hopen dat het allemaal goed zou gaan. Wat gelukkig het geval was.



Hierboven zie je de binnenkant van de allereerste iPhone, hieronder een uitgeklede versie van het meest recente model dat nu te krijgen is, terwijl daar binnenkort de iPhone X bij komt: de iPhone 8. In twee foto's zien we de enorme technische stappen die Apple heeft gemaakt in het afgelopen decennium: van een relatieve chaos tot een complete ordening, waarbij in één oogopslag duidelijk wordt dat bij Apple ook de binnenkant belangrijk is.

Apple Inc. has sold more than 1.2 billion iPhones since January 2007, when founder Steve Jobs triumphantly claimed, 'Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.' That figure, based on quarterly results that include the 15 distinct models that came out before iPhones 8 and X, means that in terms of units sold, the iPhone is probably more successful than any consumer product ever created. The device has seeded entire industries - apps, most notably - and sent the stock prices of suppliers soaring. On the other hand, suppliers that have been spurned by Apple have struggled and, in at least one case, subsequently gone bankrupt.

The story of the device’s evolution is readily available to anyone willing to crack an old phone open and look at what’s inside. To understand this, we partnered with iFixit, the website known for publishing detailed 'teardowns' of each phone, and IHS Markit, which produces estimates of the cost of electronics components. Then, with an EBay account and a little help from Sunny Lin, the founder of Simple Mac, an iPhone repair shop in New York, we got our hands on each iPhone model and opened them up. Here are the results.
