De afgelopen jaren kon je vaak bezorgde posts op ons forum lezen van mensen die dachten dat Apple de Mac zou gaan laten vallen en dat iOS het helemaal zou overnemen.

Of die bezorgdheid nog steeds bestaat is niet bekend, de afgelopen jaren is in ieder geval steeds duidelijker geworden dat Microsoft gelooft dat één device voor alles de oplossing is, terwijl Apple gelooft dat het beste device voor elke specifieke oplossing ontwikkelen de beste keuze is.

Maar afgelopen week zei Apple's CEO Tim Cook bij de lancering van de iPad Pro "I think if you're looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?". Wat er voor zorgde dat er online weer gespeculeerd werd dat Apple de Mac op een gegeven moment zou laten vallen. Zeker als je meeneemt dat de A-processor in een iPad Pro op dit moment bijna net zo krachtig is als X86 Intel processors die in onze Macs zitten.

Dat Apple dit niet van plan is maakt hij nog eens erg duidelijk in dit interview, hieronder de belangrijkste citaten daaruit.

We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad. Because what that would wind up doing, or what we're worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants. So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You'd begin to compromise in different ways.

It's true that the difference between the X86 and the A-series is much less than it's ever been. That said, what we've tried to do is to recognise that people use both iOS and Mac devices. So we've taken certain features and made them more seamless across the devices. So with things like Handoff we just made it really simple to work on one of our products and pick it up and work on the next product.

Als laatste werd er natuurlijk ook gevraagd naar de plannen van Apple voor het maken van een auto. Daar liet Tim Cook natuurlijk niet het achterste van zijn tong zien, maar hij wilde er toch wel wat over kwijt.

I don't have anything to announce about our plans. But I think there's some significant changes in the automobile industry over the next several years with electrification and autonomous driving. And there's a need for a focus on user interface. And so I think there's a lot of changes that will go on there.
