Paul Allen, mede-oprichter van Microsoft, is overleden
Jeugdvrienden Paul Allen en Bill Gates stonden in 1975 aan de wieg van Microsoft, ze wilden graag na hun studie hun eigen bedrijf runnen. Daarvoor hadden ze dat in 1972 al geprobeerd met hun eerste bedrijf, Traf-O-Data, dat simpele computers verkocht om verkeers-data vast te leggen.
Nadat Paul Allen in het magazine Popular Electronics een artikel had gelezen over de Altair 8800 microcomputer stelde hij voor dat ze een interpreter in BASIC daarvoor zou gaan schrijven. Omdat ze zelf geen Altair 8800 hadden maakte hij een simulator, terwijl Bill Gates het werk in BASIC voor de Altair deed. Bij een eerste demo bleek het allemaal prima te werken en het bedrijf achter de Altair besloot het te distribueren. Na een uitstapje in hun eigen versie van Unix (Xenix) was het uiteindelijk hun besturingssysteem voor IBM computers waardoor Microsoft de wind in de zeilen kreeg.
Maar het was niet alleen MS-DOS waardoor Microsoft in het begin succes had, ook de eerste versie van Word voor de eerste Macintosh in 1984 bracht veel geld in het laatje. Inderdaad, voor de computer van het bedrijf dat zichzelf
als het beste alternatief voor ‘Big Brother’ IBM. In het jaar daarna volgde Excel, en PowerPoint kwam in 1987 uit.
Enorm succes Door het enorme succes van Microsoft in de jaren daarna werden zowel Paul Allen als Bill Gates gerekend tot de allerrijksten ter aarde, een rijkdom die beiden voor een groot deel hebben gebruikt door het aan goede doelen te geven. De organisatie die Paul Allen daarvoor oprichtte is Vulcan,
op hun site is een verklaring van zowel zijn familie als van Vulcan te lezen. Voor de familie is de verklaring geschreven door zijn zus, Jody Allen.
My brother was a remarkable individual on every level. While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend.
Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern. For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. At this time of loss and grief for us – and so many others – we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.

Paul’s life was diverse and lived with gusto. It reflected his myriad interests in technology, music and the arts, biosciences and artificial intelligence, conservation and in the power of shared experience – in a stadium or a neighborhood – to transform individual lives and whole communities.
Paul loved Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The impact of Paul’s efforts can be seen here at every turn. But the true impact of his vision and generosity is evident around the globe.
Paul thoughtfully addressed how the many institutions he founded and supported would continue after he was no longer able to lead them. This isn’t the time to deal in those specifics as we focus on Paul’s family. We will continue to work on furthering Paul’s mission and the projects he entrusted to us. There are no changes imminent for Vulcan, the teams, the research institutes or museums.
Today we mourn our boss, mentor and friend whose 65 years were too short – and acknowledge the honor it has been to work alongside someone whose life transformed the world.
