Now that the WWDC keynote is over, Apple has published the names of the developer sessions to attendees at the conference. Previously masked by placeholder names, there are a bunch of events that folks can now plan on attending—including, apparently, a session discussing Apple's new file system for macOS.

Dubbed APFS, for "Apple File System," the session description implies that the new file system is a replacement for the aged HFS+ file system, which has been used in one form or another by OS X since its launch back in 2001. We're pretty light on details at this point, but the session description says that APFS is designed from the ground up to be optimized for use on SSDs and other flash-based media, and that it was "engineered with encryption as a primary feature."

Current Limitations

As a developer preview of this technology, there are currently several limitations:

Startup Disk: APFS volumes cannot currently be used as a startup disk.

Case Sensitivity: Filenames are currently case-sensitive only.

Time Machine: Time Machine backups are not currently supported.

FileVault: APFS volumes cannot currently be encrypted using FileVault.

Fusion Drive: Fusion Drives cannot currently use APFS.

Dat is nogal een lijst, waardoor ik nogal sceptisch ben dat dit op tijd voor Sierra klaar zal zijn. Maar als Apple het niet voor Sierra in gedacht zou hebben, waarom het dan nu op de WWDC  er over hebben?

Ben benieuwd of de files DS_Store voorafgegaan door een punt dan tot de verleden tijd gaan horen...

Die .DS_Store-bestanden hebben niks met het bestandssysteem te maken (voor het bestandssysteem zijn het gewoon bestanden net als alle andere). Dus ik verwacht niet dat dat verandert met een opvolger van HFS.

Maar zoals Pieterr al zegt: Het is nog lang niet af, vandaar waarschijnlijk geen aandacht voor in de keynote. Ook in de link van Pieterr lees ik dat dit nieuwe bestandssysteem pas in 2017 beschikbaar komt. Lijkt me dus iets voor 10.13 en niet voor Sierra...
