ALBANY, N.Y.  - 09 Jul 2015: An alliance led by IBM Research (NYSE:IBM) today announced that it has produced the semiconductor industry’s first 7nm (nanometer) node test chips with functioning transistors.  The breakthrough, accomplished in partnership with GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Samsung at SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE), could result in the ability to place more than 20 billion tiny switches -- transistors -- on the fingernail-sized chips that power everything from smartphones to spacecraft.

wat denk je, Apple weer terug naar IBM voor zijn chips?

Als dat zo is dan duurt het nog wel even, want die chips worden op zijn vroegst pas over twee jaar verwacht.

Zoals IBM het zelf aangeeft, hiermee is het terug in de race. Maar Intel zit ondertussen ook niet stil. "Apple weer terug naar IBM" acht ik niet waarschijnlijk. Dan acht ik de kans op een MacBook met een ARM "A-zoveel" (gefabriceerd door Samsung) nog groter.

waarom Pieterr, kwaliteit, prijs? Apple heeft lang met IBM samen gewerkt en nu ook op andere gebieden dus is die stap toch ook niet ondenkbaar?

Omdat IBM inmiddels actief is in een heel ander segment. Ze maken bijvoorbeeld zelf geen PCs meer.

IBM = professionele markt
Apple = consumer markt

Apple = ook professionele markt, zie de samenwerking met IBM dus dat is een drogreden.

Het gaat hier niet om een CPU architectuur ala Risc of Cisc dan wel ARM of PowerPC maar om hoe chips te bakken. Aangezien Samsung ook in de alliantie zit, kan het zomaar zijn dat die deze techniek gaan gebruiken om hun cpu's die ze nu aan Apple leveren.

Daarnaast maakt IBM helemaal geen chips meer, dat is net verkocht aan Global Foundries en doen we alleen nog design en research en laten anderen de chips bakken.

Verder gok ik dat als je kijkt naar de technology in een willekeurig mobile device van wie dan ook, de helft of meer ooit uit de research labs van IBM komt.

IBM  maakt nog steeds chips, op een vergelijkbare manier als dat Apple chips maakt. Het ontwerpen van chips is een essentieel onderdeel van het 'chips maken'. Waar je ze uiteindelijk laat bakken (in je eigen fabriek of in een foundry) is minder interessant, meer een economische afweging.

@mayo: IBM heeft zijn PC divisie verkocht aan Lenovo in 2005.

Hot Chips Big iron sales are still generating $6bn to $7bn a year for IBM - which is enough to justify designing its own Power processors and building its own wafer baker.

At the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University on Monday, some of the chief architects behind the Power8 electronics were on hand to show off the feeds and speeds of the next-generation motor for the company's Power Systems lineup.

Significantly, the Power8 chip is also the foundation for Big Blue's OpenPower consortium - an effort to make it easier to hook networking, accelerators and other features into Power processors by allowing third parties to license chunks of intellectual property in the style of ARM Holdings and its RISC cores.
