How to restore iPod for Macintosh
Follow these steps to restore iPod using the iPod Software Updater application. Note: This procedure assumes that the iPod preferences are in their default condition. This means iTunes automatically opens whenever iPod is connected to the computer with a FireWire cable.
Warning: The restore process cannot be undone. All of your data and music will be deleted. You should always keep a backup of all of your important data.
1. Connect iPod to your computer using the FireWire cable that came with iPod. iTunes opens, and if necessary updates iPod with its music library and playlists. The iTunes display notifies you when the iTunes music update is complete.
2. Quit iTunes.
3. Open the iPod Software Updater application. If you downloaded the Updater it is located in the Applications/Utilities folder. If you purchased an iPod with iPod Software 2.0, the updater is located on the disc that came with iPod.
4. Click Restore. (In Mac OS X you may need to click the padlock and type an Admin user's name and password first.) The iPod Software Updater application checks to see if iPod has the latest software. If it detects that your iPod is up-to-date, the Update button will be dimmed. An alert box appears to confirm you want to restore iPod.
5. Click Restore. A progress bar appears.
If you have iPod software 2.0 or later, skip to Step 9.
6. When the factory settings have been restored, unplug the FireWire cable from iPod.
7. When prompted by iPod, reconnect the FireWire cable. After iPod has turned on, and you see the message "Do not disconnect" iTunes automatically opens. Note: For iPod Software 1.0 through 1.1, when iPod is in FireWire Disk Mode a FireWire logo appears on the screen instead of the "Do not disconnect" message.
8. In the iTunes Setup Assistant window, type a name for iPod in the space provided.
The "Automatically update my iPod" option is selected by default. Deselect this option if you wish and click Done. The iTunes main window appears, and the download status is displayed in the iTunes display.
Wait until the iTunes display says the update is complete.
9. Quit iTunes.
Disconnect the FireWire cable from iPod. After a few moments, the Language display appears on the iPod screen.
10. Select a language.
11. Quit the iPod Software Updater application. iPod now contains the music in your iTunes music library and playlists.
