Malwarebytes realtime protection én NordVPN Threat protection én Dropbox én OneDrive en nog een paar andere zaken die geladen lijken te zijn (MS Teams, Zoom, Grammarly) en dat met 8 GB: daar zit de bottleneck een beetje denk ik. Schijf opruimen kan uiteraard ook geen kwaad, ik zou liefst minimaal 15% vrije ruimte willen overhouden.

Verwijder die realtime protecties, dat doet macOS prima zelf. En kijk of er programma's afgesloten kunnen worden als ze niet in gebruik zijn. Tijdens trage episodes eens kijken in 'Activiteitenweergave' en sorteren op CPU gebruik kan ook meer info geven.

Bedankt voor de suggesties, lijkt me een leuk project voor het Paasweekeinde

@Boiing heeft de meeste (terechte) aanbevelingen al gegeven.

Ik heb het Rapport (dat onvolledig is weergegeven - jammer dat er niets over geheugengebruik is vermeld) ook nog even doorgelopen en in de bijlage mijn aandachtspunten weergegeven.

Mijn samenvatting (parallel met @Boiing) is dat deze MacBook te zwaar wordt belast met misschien onnodige extensies én apps. Dat scheelt én schijfruimte die krap c.q. kritisch wordt én resources in het geheugen.

De traagheid kan ook mede ontstaan door teveel programma’s tegelijk open te hebben binnen 8Gb, waarbij de Macbook een swapfile gaat aanmaken op de interne SSD en dat continue swappen komt de snelheid ook niet ten goede.

Er is niets mis met NordVPN, maar misschien wel op deze Macbook. Geef eens een reden op om NordVPN daarop te gebruiken ?

Wil je daar van af dan zal er echt een stofkam door de Macbook moeten. Teveel (onnodige) programma’s met extensies, deamons etc. Alternatief is zwaardere Macbook Pro aanschaffen met grotere interne SSD en meer interngeheugen.

Je kunt ook nog wat ruimte op de huidige Macbook winnen door meer grote bestanden alleen in iCloud te parkeren. Normaal staan er een aantal bestanden zowel in iCloud als wel op de Macbook (synchronisatie zegt dit al). Zelfde geldt voor Dropbox. Als je iCloud hebt, heb je geen Dropbox en OneDrive persé nodig. Dat is luxe.

... de VPN is handig om ...

Wel of geen VPN is niet zo relevant voor het probleem waar het over ging, dat moet je zelf weten (daar kunnen inderdaad redenen voor zijn ). Mij triggerde vooral 'NordVPN Threat Protection Pro', geen idee of dat meer betektent dan alleen een VPN. Alles wat 'realtime' 'threats' moet 'protecten' op een Mac: daar ben ik een beetje allergisch voor. Net als 'Malwarebytes Realtime' vertraagt dat eerder je Mac dan dat het goed doet. Een VPN op zich maakt je Mac niet langzamer, hooguit je verbinding.

Die NordVPN Threat Protection Pro ga ik naar kijken, ben het met je eens, dat is niet nodig.

NordVPN Treat-protection is een onderdeel van NordVPN en kan afzonderlijk aan/uit worden gezet.

Binnen mijn beoordeling van het EtreCheck rapport wordt deze protectie als ‘Resource Heavy’ beoordeeld:

En MalwareBytes hoef je in principe niet te verwijderen, maar wel de continue protectie uitschakelen. Af en toe MalwareBytes draaien kan geen kwaad.

Probeer nog ruimte te winnen op je SSD en op je interne geheugen, door niet noodzakelijk opstartbestanden en deamons te verwijderen.

Wat zijn goede streefwaarden?

Dat is lastig te zeggen, maar deze ‘moment opname’ laat wel een probleem met intern geheugen zien, dat dan een swapfile gaat aanmaken op de interne SSD, waar ook al niet teveel ruimte op over is/was.

Deze Macbook wordt gewoon te zwaar belast voor waar de Macbook voor geschikt is.

Een MacOS neemt permanent ongeveer tussen de 3Gb en 4Gb meteen al in beslag van het interne geheugen van 8Gb. Je hebt dan nog 4Gb over voor programma’s. Als je dan meerdere programma’s opent dan hou je al snel (te) weinig over van het interne geheugen.

Wat je kan doen is naar de ‘Geheugendruk’ kijken in Activiteiten Weergave. Als dat doorgaans groen is, dan geen zorgen. Bij geel wordt de druk te hoog en bij regelmatig rood rood heb je te weinig geheugen.

Streefwaarde voor Free Ram is 0MB: Ongebruikt RAM is namelijk zonde van het geld en macOS gebruikt altijd zoveel mogelijk geheugen. Belangrijk is om onderscheid te maken tussen het RAM dat je in gebruik hebt voor OS en Apps en geheugen dat in principe beschikbaar is, maar als cache ingezet wordt. Dat laatste is prima, want alles wat je in RAM beschikbaar hebt en wat je dus niet van schijf hoeft te halen is sneller beschikbaar als je het later nog een keer nodig hebt.

Er is dus geen reden voor paniek als "Free RAM" erg laag is.

In de categorie "niets is wat het lijkt", snap ik niet zo goed waarom Etrecheck die info over Free RAM zo prominent toont, het geeft m.i. een behoorlijk vertekend beeld. Vergelijk je de output van Etrecheck met de informatie in Activiteitenweergave, dan zie je een totaal ander beeld.

In mijn geval geeft Etrecheck:

Wat hier volgens mij belangrijk is:
- Gebruikte swap: Hier kun je zien of je computer uit moet wijken naar tijdelijk geheugen op schijf wegschrijven. Een beetje 1-2 GB is niet erg, wordt het (veel) meer, dan gaat alles echt wel traag aanvoelen
- Available RAM.  Dát geeft aan hoeveel van je geheugen er over is.

Alles wat er gebruikt wordt als cache is bonus, daar wordt je systeem juist sneller van!

"Free RAM" is verwarrend (daarom laat Activiteitenweergave het denk ik ook niet zien?). Het suggereert dat je bijna geen vrij beschikbaar geheugen zou hebben. Maar alles wat in de cache zit, is ook per direct beschikbaar als een applicatie het nodig heeft. Gelukkig geeft Etrecheck dat ook aan in de regel "Available RAM" die dan de waarde van "Free RAM + Cached files" toont en dat is waar het echt om draait.

Zolang Available RAM niet in de buurt van 0 komt en swapfile used niet in de Gigabytes loopt is er niks aan de hand en draait alles keurig binnen het beschikbare geheugen. Dat lijkt me een mooi streven.

In het rapport dat eoms op 3 april postte is de boot-time "less than an hour" en is er 2,32GB RAM Available. Dat is dus niks om je zorgen om te maken.
Wel is aan de System-load te zien dat hij (net na het opstarten?) een hoge load heeft:

De load geeft het aantal processen aan dat tegelijk actief is en wordt gemeten over de laatste 1, 5 en 15 minuten.  Dat dat vlak na het opstarten hoog is, is niet heel gek, zeker als de schijf wat trager en voller is. Als je niks op je computer doet, zou de load normaal gesproken moeten zakken tot onder de 0,5.
