"I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and I came down here to (Buckinghamshire) United Kingdom, for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed,all cash,credit cards and cell were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

I have been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves pretty soon from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. your contribution will go along way here. Dit mailtje was afkomstig van het bij mij bekende adres van mijn (Canadese) vriend, en ondertekend met zijn juiste naam en adres. Ook de reply-to klopte.

Enigszins beduusd, maar ook wel argwanend, antwoordde ik

"Is there a way you could call me?
I just want to be sure that I’m not a victim of some kind of scam. [hier mijn telefoonnummer]"

Binnen een minuut kreeg ik het volgende antwoord, per mail, weer van dat vertrouwde adres:

"     I'm so glad to read from you, thanks so much for your concern,Its been a terrible situation i find myself in  .. don't have access to my phone since i lost it to the muggers I'm literally stranded out here and need your help to get back home.. i had my credit card canceled since i have lost it to the muggers. I need you to loan me some cash,I need $1,750 to get things fixed out here(settle my hotel bills and also get my ticket straightened out)so i can get back home,i will definitely refund the money back to you when i am back home, Your contribution will go a long way and i will surely show gratitude towards you when i am back home.You can have the money wired to me via Western Union.Have it wired to my name and present location, here are the details you need to have it wired to me..

Omdat hij had genegeerd om mij te bellen, en ik mij bedacht had, dat ik in zijn situatie gewoon contact met of mijn moeder, of mijn bank zou hebben opgenomen, draaide ik het telefoonnummer van die vriend.

Hij nam op, er bleek helemaal niets aan de hand te zijn. Hij vertelde mij, dat zijn yahoo-account was gehacked, en dat hij, als hijzelf wilde inloggen de melding kreeg "this account has been closed for security reasons"

Hoe werkt dit? Hoe kan het zijn, dat ik dan toch een antwoord kreeg, ondanks het feit dat yahoo het heeft afgesloten?

Hoe zouden de boeven, als ik naief toch geld had overgemaakt, dit bedrag kunnen claimen, onder de naam van mijn vriend?

En: loopt mijn emailadres nu zelf ook gevaar, sinds ik op een of andere manier in contact heb gestaan met deze oplichters?
