De meeste DJ’s kunnen beter nog niet upgraden naar Catalina
Een nieuwe versie van een besturingssysteem betekent ook altijd dat er apps zijn die daar nog niet goed mee om kunnen gaan. Het meteen upgraden is dan ook vooral voor de avonturiers, hoewel ook die het beste eerst
kunnen kijken of de belangrijkste apps al klaar zijn voor deze versie.
Voor DJ’s hierbij een speciale waarschuwing: wacht even tot je favoriete apps allemaal klaar zijn voor macOS 10.15 Catalina, want de kans dat het op dit moment niet goed werkt is erg groot. Want met het verdwijnen van iTunes, dat in dit geval is vervangen door de Muziek-app, want dat betekent dat het synchroniseren met de XML-bestanden van iTunes die door veel DJ-apps tot nu toe gebruikt werden niet meer zal werken.
Apps als
Rekordbox en
Traktor gebruiken bijvoorbeeld deze functie, en hebben daarom een stevige update nodig voordat ze in Catalina te gebruiken zijn. Wil je wel persé Catalina gebruiken, dan zie je in de video hierboven een mogelijke oplossing. Maar dat is er een die je iedere keer dat er iets aan een playlist verandert moet herhalen, dus niet echt een realistische oplossing.
Volgens Apple wordt er met ontwikkelaars van DJ-apps gewerkt aan een oplossing, de verwachting is dan ook dat er in de komende tijd updates uit zullen komen die de overstap naar Catalina ook voor DJ’s mogelijk maakt. Meer details hierover zijn te vinden in

Apple's SDKVoor de volledigheid is het de moeite om te vermelden dat Apple dit bij na uitkomen van iTunes in 2014 al heeft gemeld, en dat er een
SDK is waar de makers van DJ-apps gebruik van kunnen maken. De ontwikkelaars van Algoriddim, de makers van de app
djay schrijven hier het volgende over:
While 3rd party software applications have been using the undocumented XML file written by iTunes to read the iTunes library, Apple added an official SDK to programmatically access the iTunes library with the release of iTunes 11. According to Apple, this SDK was designed to replace the iTunes XML file and provides a deep, fully sandboxed integration with the iTunes library.
Algoriddim has been using this SDK since the initial release of djay Pro for backing its native integration with the user’s iTunes library.
As the SDK comes bundled with macOS and is technically independent of the iTunes app, it continues to provide the same access to the user’s media library on macOS Catalina. Furthermore, the new “Music” app that is replacing iTunes on macOS Catalina is built on top of the same SDK, and thus the Music app allows users to continue managing their existing iTunes media libraries.
