I thought the last iPad Mini was a disappointment, a product made from spare parts without any particular reason for existence. This year’s Mini feels mostly like a return to form. It’s powerful enough to be useful for a long time. It’s lighter and thinner than ever. The 60Hz refresh rate is a bummer, but I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker for most people. And it’s really the only downside. Though at this price, should you have to deal with any downsides?

The iPad mini 8 is a phenomenal little tablet that I can’t get enough of using. And that’s saying a lot considering how the iPad Pro is my usual daily driver. I just love how vivid and sharp videos and books look on the tandem OLED panel. Holding the iPad is also nice thanks to its thinner, lighter design.

Even if the iPad mini 8 is now pricier than before, it’s a worthwhile purchase. You won’t find a tablet this small offering the same rich features and delightful experience. It also hints at what’s to come, as I’m sure Apple will incorporate features like Audio Display into future iPads. But for now, this is the most exciting iPad mini ever.

And while I’m sure the iPhone Duo will eat into the iPad mini’s user base to a degree, let’s not forget that even the expensive $1,149 iPad mini model I’ve been testing is significantly more affordable than an iPhone Duo and starts at $699. And, while it may not fold in half, the iPad mini also runs iPadOS, which has many more tricks up its sleeve than the Duo does, including freely resizable, overlapping windows, Slide Over, Stage Manager, Sidecar, and Universal Control.

Ultimately, that’s what I love most about the iPad mini. For a device that’s only 9 grams heavier than the iPhone Duo you get the full iPad experience and a cellular connection in a device that may not fit in your pocket, but is as easy to take with you as a paperback book. It’s a chameleon that isn’t a phone or a laptop, adapting to whatever users need from getting work done to sitting back and enjoying a book. That’s never been more true than with the mightier than ever iPad mini.
