So, would I pay a single penny extra for a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar versus the exact same machine with physical function keys? Honestly, no.Which is the very definition of a gimmick: something which is technologically impressive but actually adds zero value. So is the Touch Bar a gimmick? I say yes. What do you say? As ever, please take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.Ben Lovejoy, British technology writer and EU Editor for 9to5Mac
there are times when it the Touch Bar is actively counterproductive. There are a number of ways it can slow me down. For example, if I want to use the music controls, and the Touch Bar isn’t expanded, it’s two touches in two places rather than one keypress. Or if the bar is expanded and I instead want to mute the machine, it’s again two touches in two places.
03:06the touch bar, even if Apple did add a lot more customization options to the touch bar, my honest opinion - and this is one coming from a Mac lover - is yes, it's a gimmick. And it’s almost seems like Apple feels the same way since they only offer it on the MacBook Pro.If it really was an innovation I would have thought that they would release a keyboard with the touch bar built-in, so that any Mac user could reap the benefits of this revolutionary keyboard experience. But they don't. This means that the touch bar is only accessible to a limited amount of Mac users and since it's on a pro machine, many of the users will have it in clamshell mode without having access tothe touch bar anyway, further minimizing the adoption of this tech. Even though I prefer the touch bar to be scrapped, in all likehood it will stay.
The more I use the Touch Bar, the more I become convinced of its potential utility. Even if you only ever use it to control system settings once you get used to it, I think it’s easier and more convenient to use than the old function buttons. Being able to use quick sliders instead of mashing down a button one or more times to adjust things like volume and brightness is pretty cool, and the customizable buttons make it easy to do a few things (screen locking, Siri, screenshots) that previously required obscure key combos.Naturally, some uses work better than others. The emoji picker is a great change if you use emoji at all; the typing suggestions (which seem to have been ported over from the iPhone and iPad without many changes) are less useful, especially for touch typists of any competence level. I typically type somewhere between 70 and 80 words per minute, and at that speed I’m almost never even looking at the suggestions, let alone using them (I suspect that will be the case for most people looking to drop $2,000 on a laptop). And that’s even when the typing suggestions aren’t offering silly suggestions like “I” or “a” when the actual physical “I” and “a” keys are just inches away. It’s also too bad that the Touch Bar’s focus can’t change based on where the trackpad cursor is rather than what window you have in the foreground. If you’re mainly typing in Notes or TextEdit and you move the cursor over the top of a Safari window, you can scroll up and down in that window, but the Touch Bar’s contents won’t change unless you actually click that window and bring it into the foreground. The Touch Bar also times out in the name of saving battery life, which completely makes sense but can be less convenient than the static function keys if you’re just playing audio or video and not interacting with the computer for extended periods of time. The Touch Bar’s display dims after 60 seconds and turns off after another 15, and you have to tap it, the keyboard, or the trackpad to wake it back up. There are no controls anywhere in the System Preferences for changing this even if you want to.The ultimate utility of the Touch Bar is going to depend entirely on the apps you use and, to a lesser extent, how you use your computer. If it’s being used as a desktop with an external keyboard a significant amount of the time, the Touch Bar does nothing for you. When I went out of my way to use Apple’s apps, I liked the Touch Bar a lot. It just takes one or two useful buttons—creating a new tab in Safari, looking up a man page in Terminal, changing font sizes or creating checklists in Notes—to make you glad the Touch Bar is there. However, a typical day for me is spent mostly in Word, Outlook, Slack, Tweetbot, and Chrome. Microsoft is bringing Touch Bar support to Office, but if other app makers don’t start adding in support, a big chunk of that bar is going to end up sitting empty most of the time.
